December 2005 will be one to remember and one for the record books. I cant recall when weve had as many geese on the Front Range as weve had this December. We easily have 300,000 Canada Geese here. Arctic cold and snow blanketed Southern Canada, Montana, and the Dakotas. Driving thousands upon thousands of Canada geese and ducks into Colorado. Even though we had a good taste of winters bite with temps well below zero and snow for several days, the birds kept coming. The good news, when the weather broke and temps started retuning to normal the geese where still here. As usual they were able to find open water and plenty of open grain fields to keep them satisfied. The result has been some of the best early season goose and duck hunting weve ever had. It looks like the middle of January around here one hunter described observing thousands of geese milling around while picking up decoys. With more birds staged just to the North of Colorado there is no doubt this will be a record book season for wintering numbers of Honkers along Colorados Front Range.
We also took advantage of some of the best duck numbers weve seen here in a long time. The 70 Ranch was very consistent throughout the first and second split. Cornfield hunting for Mallards was as good as it can get.
January 2006 will be media month around Stillwater. Doug Miller will be here for his third year in a row during the first week. Those of you in the Salt Lake region can look forward to seeing another exciting hunt with Doug sometime in mid January. Jeff Foiles rolls into town the second and third week to guide hunters for Stillwater and shoot video for Realtree, Fallin Skies III, and Final Approach. Last but not least Cabelas is bringing their film crew to town to shoot a TV show that will air next season.
The best news of all is that as I write this there is seven weeks of goose hunting yet to go around here. We still have spots available toward the end of January and February. The remaining spots will fill fast and well be starting a waiting list soon. Dont wait until the last minute to get a late season hunt on the books.
One final note look for us at the International Sportsmans Expo in Denver January 26 thru 29 2006. Stop by and swap some stories.
